Baptismal Service 1st November 2009
This was an inspired evening as we took pleasure in baptising 9 candidates. You could feel the emotion as they shared their testimonies, before going through the waters of baptism. Having already accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour this was another step in their Christian walk. Join with us in giving thanks to God that he is still adding to His Church. Pray for each candidate that their public declaration of their love for him will result in others seeking to know more about the Christian faith.
Will Coley The Singing Gaffer
Will Coley’s story speaks volumes about the power of God over medical science. Before becoming a Christian, Will Coley spent several years working as a local publican. His passion for singing got him the renowned name, ‘the singing gaffer’. In 1999, both his music and general health were in jeopardy when both of his lungs collapsed. Doctors had told him that he “wouldn’t sing again”. There was light at the end of the tunnel when he made what the medical professionals saw as a miraculous recovery, he gave his heart to Christ, holding strong to his conviction that “Jesus has given me new life”. With this new lease of life and empowerment, Will Coley now views his music as a way to give back to God. As a member of Cannon Street, he performs frequently to a church audience of 400. Looking back on his life, Will now holds strongly to the words of scripture found in Matthew 6:19-21: “Do not store up for yourselves treasure on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal”. As far as Will’s music is concerned, he would love to record a CD but resolves him in not leaning on my own understanding but on God. His singing style carries an unconventional tone to the contemporary gospel and has even been compared to the late Elvis Presley. “I love singing. If God leads, I follow” seems to adequately sum up the man of God.
Since early on in 2008, Cannon Street church member Will Coley has been involved in a project that will see the construction of brand new toilet facilities within the remote village of Kampala, Uganda. After frequent liaisons with Pastor Tucker and with the full support of his ministry, Christ Sanctuary International along with Cannon Street Memorial Baptist church, the construction is now reaching its final stages of completion. The majority of the structural work is now finished and is in the process of having additional wash basins fitted as well as the installation of the electric lights, with doors to section off the toilets. In the initial planning stages of this project, it was estimated that the project would cost a staggering £15m to complete. Through the various fundraising events that Cannon Street have hosted in addition to the generous donations given by a multitude of churches within the Birmingham area, up to date, just over £10m has been sent over to aid building work as well as the cost of any necessary materials. Cannon Street church was met with an overwhelming response from the extensive Christian community to financially assist a project of such enormity and as a result, donation after donation has enabled the project to see the fulfillment of what was hoped . ‘I would love to do more projects but there is so much to do in our own church’, says Will and is presently focusing much of his time on the elderly and children within Cannon Street Memorial Baptist Church. He has proposed several projects to Pastor Scott which include the installation of stage lights into the Sunday school area and talks are in progress to build adequate toilet facilities for both the elderly and disabled members of the church. The saving grace of God continues to be the sole driving force behind the numerous projects and he is showing no signs of slowing down. |
